Connecting your PlayStation 4 to the internet allows you to download games, install patches, access online features, and use streaming apps. Whether you own the original PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Slim, or PlayStation 4 Pro, this guide covers every connection method including Wi-Fi, LAN cable, fiber broadband, and mobile hotspot.

Before going online, many users accidentally update their system firmware. To avoid that, block automatic updates first. [Related: How to Block PS4 System Updates]

This guide also explains settings like IP Address, DNS, Gateway, and Proxy Server, so you know exactly what your PS4 is asking for.

Important Safety Step

Before connecting your PS4 to the internet:

Go to: Settings → System → Automatic Downloads

Turn OFF:

❌ System Software Update Files
❌ Application Update Files

Then go to: Settings → Network

Make sure:

✅ Connect to the Internet is ticked

Now your PS4 can go online without automatically downloading firmware updates.

Before You Connect

Go to: Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection

You will see two options:

OptionMeaning
Use Wi-FiWireless connection
Use a LAN CableWired connection

For most users, selecting Easy setup is all you need.

Method 1: Connect Using Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is the easiest option for most users.

  1. Go to: Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection
  2. Select Use Wi-Fi
  3. Select Easy
  4. Choose your Wi-Fi network
  5. Enter your Wi-Fi password
  6. Select Connect
  7. Run Test Internet Connection

Done.

Method 2: Connect Using LAN Cable

A LAN cable gives the most stable connection for gaming and large downloads.

What you need:

  • Ethernet cable
  • Router or modem
  1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to your PS4
  2. Connect the other end to your router
  3. Go to: Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection
  4. Select Use a LAN Cable
  5. Select Easy
  6. Run Test Internet Connection

Done.

Method 3: Connect Using Fiber Broadband

Fiber is high-speed internet provided through a fiber router.

Examples:

  • JioFiber
  • Airtel Fiber
  • ACT Fibernet

Fiber works exactly like Wi-Fi or LAN.

Best setup:

✅ Fiber Router + LAN Cable

Benefits:

✅ Lower ping
✅ Faster downloads
✅ Better online gaming

Method 4: Connect Using Mobile Hotspot

Useful when no router is available.

  1. On your phone enable: Personal Hotspot or Mobile Hotspot
  2. On your PS4: Go to: Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection
  3. Select Use Wi-Fi
  4. Select your phone hotspot
  5. Enter password
  6. Select Connect

Done.

Method 5: Connect Using PC Internet Sharing

Useful in hotels, dorm rooms, or office setups.

  1. On your Windows PC enable: Mobile Hotspot or Network Sharing
  2. Then connect your PS4 using: Wi-Fi or Ethernet

Done.

Understanding Network Settings

When using Custom setup, your PS4 may ask for additional network information. Here is what each setting means.

What Is an IP Address?

An IP Address (Internet Protocol Address) is your PS4’s network identity. Think of it like your home address.

Example: 192.168.1.25

Every device on your network gets its own IP address.

What Is DNS?

DNS (Domain Name System) converts website names into real server addresses.

For example you type: playstation.com
DNS finds the correct server automatically.

Popular DNS servers:

ProviderPrimarySecondary
Google8.8.8.88.8.4.4
Cloudflare1.1.1.11.0.0.1

Some users also use custom DNS to stay online while blocking unwanted system updates.

What Is Subnet Mask?

A Subnet Mask helps devices understand which devices belong to the same network.

Typical example:
255.255.255.0
Most users never need to change this.

What Is Default Gateway?

The Gateway is usually your router.

It sends your internet traffic outside your home network.

Example: 192.168.1.1

What Is a Proxy Server?

A Proxy Server acts like a middleman between your PS4 and the internet.

For most home users Select: ✅ Do Not Use

Only use a proxy if your school, office, or custom setup requires it.

Easy vs Custom Setup

When connecting your PS4, you will see two setup options:

OptionBest For
EasyMost users
CustomStatic IP, custom DNS, proxy

If you only want internet access: ✅ Always choose Easy

If you want custom DNS or manual settings: ✅ Choose Custom

How to Use Custom DNS

  1. Go to: Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection
  2. Select Wi-Fi or LAN
  3. Select Custom
  4. Leave IP settings on Automatic
  5. Enter your preferred DNS manually
  6. Leave Proxy Server on Do Not Use

Done.
